Tuition presentation gets lukewarm reception
Covenant Plan would pay for Christian schools but has legal concerns
Despite a strong emphasis on Christian day school education in the Christian Reformed Church, Calvin Theological Seminary students do not receive any special funding to send their own children to Christian schools. But a plan presented to CTS students and faculty on Thursday could help pay for Christian school tuition for the children of CTS students and all families in a participating church. Milt Kuyers, chairperson and CEO of GMK Companies and architect of the “Covenant Plan,” spoke to students and faculty who came to the Student Center to hear the details about his plan. Kuyers spoke passionately about his own experience regarding Christian education, the development of the Covenant Plan within other churches, and the details of the Plan and reasons why he believes churches should adopt it.

Reflections on writing
Dialogue, when done with passion, humility and respect, is a truly wonderful thing that spurs us on to deeper levels of understanding and conviction. With that in mind, I am thankful to all those who responded to my article “Right Idea, Wrong Execution.” Particularly interesting to me was Sean Baker’s emphasis in his article last week ("Service Learning Reconsidered") that Service Learning Day intentionally frustrates those who participate in it.

By theological measure, it has been a month of division. The question is whether we can take seriously those in our elected offices, banks, and media outlets who assure us that, despite some setbacks, the general condition of our humanity is improving. Improving in what way – and how can such progress be measured?
