Letters to the editor

(Re: “Why I am a feminist,” Kerux, Oct. 23, 2006)

I agree with Meg Jenista’s point that both genders are created equally, so, according to the sense of the term feminism, as Meg defined it in her article, I affirm that this is definitely a Biblical principle. However, I was disappointed when I saw she hadn’t dealt with Paul’s controversial passages on a woman’s role in the creation order, as well as in church, etc, located in 1 Timothy 2:8-3:1a and in 1 Corinthians 11:2-16.

A Biblical Reformed hermeneutic takes into account the progressive nature of revelation, and upholds that all of God’s Word must be considered in order to more accurately understand His revealed will on a topic. I will not offer my explanation of the two difficult to understand passages that I cited above, except to point out that in considering more fully God’s revelation, the two above-cited passages do not necessarily exclude affirming the equality of both genders in God’s eyes. Thus I would like to point out that Meg’s article does not Scripturally prove that some sort of a hierarchical role in certain male/female relationships necessarily negates an equal-worth-before-God’s-(and believers’)-eyes understanding of the genders. So just because male and female are of equal value does not necessarily mean that they cannot have different relational roles – as the Apostle Paul seems to express.
