Welcome to Grand Rapids
by Michael De Witt, Acting Editor-in-Chief
Temperatures are dipping in west Michigan. Soon the leaves will turn golden and fall, rustling, onto the paths leading up to the doors of Calvin Theological Seminary. Already students, faculty and staff are treading those paths. New friendships are forming, old ones are being renewed, and everywhere the sound of pages turning reminds us that this is, after all, still a school.
With the start of the new school year comes one more thing to read: a new volume of The Kerux, the seminary’s newspaper and the voice of her students. With so many other publications already writing about Christian issues one could ask why we need one more. I could respond that Kerux is a place to speak about church issues in the language of intelligent Christianity with our unique, Reformed accent, and it would be true. More than this, however, we want Kerux to serve as a forum for issues specific to the CTS community. A place to ask questions about our immediate surroundings and get answers to questions we might not even know we ought to be asking.
In recent years the seminary has taken steps to expand our education here beyond simple book learning into holistic development. Part of that development means confronting the issues of life. The Kerux staff hopes to be an important part of that process this year at CTS. Within these pages we will be discussing matters of importance to the entire student body: reporting on seminary policy, voicing opinions, listening to counter-opinions, examining our culture, and taking time out for humor and poetry. We hope you will join in on this discussion through reading and writing responses of your own.
In this initial issue we have compiled a trio of reflections on last summer and the coming year from three different students at three different points in their seminary careers. Also be sure to check out Brian Bork’s interview with Calvin College’s Dave Ellens about his new play, Seven Passages, opening September 27. Good luck to all of you as you enter a new year of studying and growing!
