Submit to the Kerux

So you want to submit to The Kerux?  That’s great!  There are just a few simple rules we ask you to follow to make our lives a little easier.

First, you must be a current student or a student spouse to make a submission. The Kerux team might ask faculty, staff, and alumni to contribute on occasion, but this is primarily a student-led endeavor!

Second, there are several types of submissions you can make. Here are the category options:

News—This is a piece from a fairly objective, reporting standpoint. For instance, you went to a lecture, and are reporting the turnout, key points of the lecture, and the general reception. Or there’s a major leak in the Seminary and you interview a few people to find out how bad it is and how long it’ll take to fix.

Op/Ed—Short for Opinion Editorials. You have an opinion and as a member of this community, you have a right to share it. You can talk about anything from how CTS needs more toilets, or how Protestants need to curtail their badger bashing. Two things to remember: First, though The Kerux will print your opinions, this does not mean that we sanction them.

Personal Story—There are a lot of amazing people in this Seminary with amazing stories within and beyond these walls. We’d love to hear from you and give the wider community a chance to get to know you better and to benefit from your experience.

Announcement—Anything from “I’m having a baby!” to “Dr. Footius will be lecturing on the Tetragrammaton on the 1st of November”— if you have an announcement for the community, The Kerux is the place to post it.

Letter to the Editor—Letters must refer to an article no more than seven days old and be no more than 150 words long. If your letter exceeds this length, we will print 150 words of it and publish up to 300 words online.

Photos—Snap a shot of an event, occurrence, or just something really pretty and send it to us. While we may not be able to print all of them, we’ll try to publish as many of your pictures as possible.

Creative PiecesAre you a poet? Writer? Artist? Woodcarver? Singer/Song writer? Cartoonist? We’d love for you to share those gifts with the seminary.

Prayer Requests—Prayer is the glue that holds us together, to ourselves, and to the heart of our loving God. If you have a prayer request, or know of something that needs prayer, and would like to invite the Seminary community to pray with you, please pass that along to us. We do ask that if the prayer request is personal and on the behalf of someone else that you obtain their permission, if possible.

Theological Reflection—Heard a good sermon? Had a good insight into scripture yourself? Of course you have, you’re in seminary! Why don’t you share it with the community?

Review—Books, movies, music, shows, concerts, restaurants. Review them and give the Seminary community a heads up.

Third, identify yourself. Include your name and date of graduation or your position in the Seminary. If you believe you have a good reason for anonymity, explain that to us and we’ll evaluate your claim.  Additionally, remember we are a community of Christians—this does not mean that you can’t express a negative opinion, but it does mean that you should express it in as loving and just a way as possible.

Fourth, edit your work. We ask that you edit and copy edit as thoroughly as possible to save us time and energy. Remove grammatical errors and spelling mistakes, and tidy up those comma splices. Preferred format is Times New Roman, 12pt font, with no spaces between the lines. We will not reject a piece that needs a lot of editing, but you don’t want to do that to us, right? If we make substantial changes to your piece, we will email you a revised copy. We’re looking for 2-5 pages double-spaced

Fifth, submit to The Kerux via email: kerux@calvinseminary.edu.

Important note: At The Kerux, we are tolerant of many things, but these we will not tolerate:

  • Openly hostile language, especially when directed at God, the Bible, the Church, the CRC, Calvin Theological Seminary, and any member of the Seminary
  • Slurs against any person or people group.
  • Racist, sexist, homophobic, anti-religious, or generally bigoted language of any kind.
  • Slander
  • Foul language (unless you have a good reason for using said language, with written explanation to be evaluated by the Dean of Students).
  • Lewd or inappropriate pictures.

If you submit something that violates this once, we reserve the right to censor your piece or to reject it altogether.

Thank you, and blessings to you as you consider submitting to The Kerux!

Grace, peace, and love, The Kerux Team
