So Long and Thanks for All the Fish: A Summer Farewell

Dear Fellow Students of Calvin Seminary,

As another semester draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the journey we have shared together. We’ve delved into deep theological waters, wrestled with profound questions, and pursued a deeper understanding of our faith. The challenges you’ve faced, the late nights of studying, and the mental and spiritual exhaustion have all led us to this moment of transition. It is with mixed emotions that I bid you farewell for the summer, but I am filled with hope and anticipation for the refreshing season that lies ahead.

In contemplating this farewell, I couldn’t help but draw inspiration from “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and its memorable phrase, “So Long and Thanks for All the Fish.” Though the book speaks of dolphins leaving Earth, it reminds us of the beauty and complexity of the universe and the importance of cherishing the moments we have together. As you embark on this summer break, I encourage you to take some time to reflect, to rest, and to seek God’s presence to refresh your spirits.

The journey of theological study can be intellectually demanding and emotionally draining. It requires us to dive deep into the mysteries of God, engage in critical thinking, and grapple with profound ideas. Yet, amidst the rigors of academia, we must remember to nourish our souls and cultivate our relationship with our Creator.

This summer is an opportunity for you to reconnect with the source of your calling and to seek the spiritual sustenance that will invigorate your faith. Just as dolphins leaping through the waves bring joy and wonder, your pursuit of God during this break can bring a renewed sense of purpose and enthusiasm. It is in these moments of stillness and reflection that God often reveals Himself in new and unexpected ways.

So, how can you embark on this quest for spiritual refreshment? Let me offer a few suggestions:

  1. Engage in Scripture: Dive into the depths of God’s Word. Choose a book of the Bible you’ve always wanted to explore or revisit a familiar passage with fresh eyes. Allow the Scriptures to speak to you, guide you, and challenge you.
  2. Embrace Creation: Spend time in nature, whether it’s walking through a forest, hiking up a mountain, or sitting by the shore of a tranquil lake. Allow the beauty of creation to awaken your senses and remind you of God’s grandeur.
  3. Cultivate Silence and Solitude: Carve out moments of stillness and silence in your daily routine. Disconnect from the noise and distractions of the world and create space for God to speak to your heart.
  4. Connect with Community: Seek out fellowship with fellow believers, whether it’s through joining a summer Bible study, attending a retreat, or participating in a mission trip. Shared experiences and collective worship can nourish your spirit and foster growth in your relationship with God.
  5. Embrace Rest and Play: Take time to relax, have fun, and engage in activities that bring you joy. Remember that God delights in seeing His children enjoy the good gifts He has given.
  6. Embrace Detachment: get lost in a good book about another place, time or reality. I love and highly recommend the Hitchhikers Guide series, but anything that transports you far from the walls of the seminary in your mind would be great. Maybe visit Narnia, or the Shire or Hogwarts (oh my how controversial).

As you embark on this summer adventure, remember that the experiences, knowledge, and friendships formed during your time at Calvin Seminary will continue to shape your journey. Cherish the memories, the laughter, and the moments of growth, for they are part of your unique story.

Finally, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each one of you. Thank you for your dedication, your passion for learning, and your commitment to pursuing God’s calling on your life. You have enriched our community with your presence, your insights, and your love for Christ. I am honored to have been a part of your journey, and I eagerly await the chapters that lie ahead.

So long, dear students, and thanks for all the fish! May this summer be a time of deep spiritual refreshment, joy, and renewal as you seek God’s presence. I look forward to our reunion in the fall, ready to embark on new adventures together.

In Christ’s love,

Adam Sculnick
